FIT Nutrition Interns Present FIT Research at Texas ACSM Meeting

FIT undergraduate Nutrition interns, Laurel Bagwell, Meredith McKenzie, and Morgan Pettyjohn presented research posters at the Annual Meeting of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine on March 3 at Texas A&M University.

Laurel’s research titled, “Body Composition and Body Satisfaction in Adult Men and Women,” examined data from 1,404 individuals who had DXA body composition scans in FIT. The body composition measures most highly correlated with body dissatisfaction in women were total, android, and trunk fat mass. For men it was android, total, and trunk %fat, android fat mass and android mass. At equivalent levels of body fat, more women than men were dissatisfied with their body composition. Of those dissatisfied with their body composition, more women (81.8%) than men (57.5%) wanted to lose weight while more men (42.5%) than women (19.2%) wanted to gain weight and/or muscle.

Both Meredith and Morgan developed Lean Mass Index (lean mass in kg divided by height in meters squared) percentiles in men (Meredith) and women (Morgan) using data from 1,404 individuals who had DXA body composition scans in FIT. Both found that the Lean Mass Index was lower in younger individuals, 18-22 years of age, and that the percentiles developed were similar to those from the few previously published studies. The Lean Mass Index percentiles developed by Meredith and Morgan have been incorporated into the body composition results given at FIT.

These three abstracts were published in the Conference Proceedings in the International Journal of Exercise Science and can be found at http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/ijesab/vol2/iss8/
