Thank you for your interest in joining the LEAP Lab as a doctoral student! The School Psychology Ph.D. program is mentor model, so students who apply to work with Dr. Bearman and are accepted typically stay in the lab for the 5 years of their on-site training, before leaving for internship. It’s a major investment for everyone, so making sure the fit is right is most important!

Dr. Bearman’s research and the focus of the LEAP Lab is on mental health treatment effectiveness and implementation in community settings that are low-resource, and often publicly funded. This has primarily focused on mental health clinics, primary care, and schools. We form community partnerships with agencies and entities that serve kids and families and often work directly with providers or caregivers to adjust evidence-based interventions to be a better fit to complicated service systems. We are also interested in what types of support (consultation, supervision) can prepare providers to implement evidence-based interventions, and in the role of implementation quality (adherence and competence) in effectiveness. We don’t directly provide clinical services and a lot of our work is with the adults who provide services to children and families, rather than with the children and families themselves.

Doctoral students in Dr. Bearman’s lab often take lead roles on current projects or use existing data from completed projects to develop their program of research. Our lab is a busy and productive environment that is a good fit for students who are interested in a career that centers research and academic pursuits.
