Texas Faces the Future Distinguished Lecture Featuring Hon. Judge John K. Dietz
On Thursday, May 14, the Texas Faces the Future Distinguished Lecture returns as the Honorable John K. Dietz outlines the constitutional standards of adequacy, suitability, efficiency, and de facto statewide ad valorem property taxation. Judge Dietz will be joined with commentary from the Honorable Jimmie Don Aycock, Chair of the Texas House Public Education Committee, and David Hinojosa, National Director of Policy with IDRA. The public discussion will be moderated by TCEP Director, Dr. Valenzuela.

In the spring of 2011, the Texas legislature cut education funding the first time in over four decades. Regardless of the opportunity to end funding disparities, nearly $6.6 billion in cuts were made, pushing millions of Texas children aside. In response to nearly $6.6 billion budget cuts, communities across Texas are taking action to make sure that schools are equipped to guarantee that all children graduate ready for college and career.
Fair Funding Now! is an initiative led by the Intercultural Development and Research Association (IDRA). Based in San Antonio, Texas, IDRA is led by Dr. Maria “Cuca” Robledo Montecel and continues to be a state leader in providing educational research and resources that aim to strengthen public schools for all students since its inception in 1973.
IDRA’s efforts have brought together notable state leaders such as League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Mexican American School Board Members Association (MASBA) and Texas Center for Educational Policy (TCEP) to hold a series of roundtable discussions across the state. The goals of these roundtables are to educate multiple stakeholders on the budget crisis and provide them with tools to respond within their respective schools and districts.

“Greetings! The Texas Center for Education Policy (TCEP) has been in existence since Spring 2006. A central purpose of the center is to bring researchers together whose work has direct bearing on policy issues of the day and to in turn bring them together with larger stakeholder education communities statewide. We have accomplished this through policy brown bags, educational convenings, and conferences. Building on the University of Texas tradition of distinguished scholarship, the Texas Center for Education Policy is committed to research on equity and excellence in PK-16 education. The Center will promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research, analysis, and dissemination of information to impact the development of educational policy by bringing together university entities in partnership with local, state, national and international education communities.
