Here, Caribbean- & African American male undergraduates (total N = 141) at an urban US university with a largely minority student body are compared in terms of (1) grade point average (GPA), & (2) attitudes & beliefs toward academic achievement. Questionnaire & scale data reveal no significant differences between subgroups (African American, Afro Caribbean, African Latino, & Continental African) in study habits, attitudes, or GPA. Significant between-group differences were found, however, on the basis of parental socioeconomic status & educational level. The impact of parental education & occupational status on achievement orientation is discussed. 2 Tables, 38 References. K.
