Many <\/span>Black <\/span>male <\/span>student<\/span>–<\/span>athletes <\/span>suffer from <\/span>identity <\/span>foreclosure <\/span>at <\/span>rates <\/span>higher <\/span>than their <\/span>white <\/span>peers <\/span>as <\/span>they <\/span>fail <\/span>to <\/span>develop <\/span>salient <\/span>aspects <\/span>of <\/span>their <\/span>identity <\/span>outside <\/span>of the <\/span>athlete <\/span>role <\/span>(<\/span>Murphy<\/span>, <\/span>Petitpas<\/span>, <\/span>& <\/span>Brewer<\/span>, <\/span>1996<\/span>; <\/span>Beamon<\/span>, <\/span>2012<\/span>)<\/span>. <\/span>Education abroad <\/span>offers <\/span>the <\/span>opportunity <\/span>to <\/span>take <\/span>advantage <\/span>of <\/span>a <\/span>holistic <\/span>collegiate <\/span>experience<\/span>, <\/span>which <\/span>impedes <\/span>the <\/span>detrimental effects <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>athletic <\/span>identity <\/span>foreclosure <\/span>process<\/span>. <\/span>International <\/span>educational <\/span>opportunities <\/span>can <\/span>positively <\/span>influence <\/span>Black <\/span>male <\/span>student athletes <\/span>personal<\/span>, <\/span>academic<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>professional <\/span>development <\/span>as <\/span>they <\/span>come <\/span>to <\/span>see <\/span>the <\/span>world <\/span>beyond <\/span>the gym <\/span>and <\/span>campus<\/span>. <\/span>This article <\/span>examines <\/span>the <\/span>s<\/span>ig<\/span>nificance <\/span>and <\/span>value <\/span>of <\/span>creating <\/span>education abroad <\/span>opportunities <\/span>for <\/span>Black <\/span>male <\/span>student<\/span>–<\/span>athletes <\/span>as <\/span>a <\/span>means <\/span>of <\/span>providing meaningful educational <\/span>opportunities <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>realm <\/span>of <\/span>higher <\/span>education<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
