Chapter 1 describes the purpose of the research by noting how the absence of empirically driven research and variability in designs has brought inconsistent findings in addressing the effectiveness of single-sex schools. Because of the increase in these types of schools (in 1999 only four single-sex schools existed in the United States and by 2006 that number increased to 506) a demand for research on their effectiveness has also intensified. […]the authors state that the book’s findings signal a “mixed message” as to the effectiveness of single-sex education.<\/p>\n
