There’s no simple answer why black males struggle with reading, but part of the problem stems from correctable factors that tend to lead to an early disconnect.
Black boys are unique in that they’re in two groups that have historically underachieved in reading — boys and blacks. Although black boys are not a homogenous group, understanding what underlies gaps in both arenas can help educators develop responses to reduce the disparities.
