Little is known about salient school contextual and structural variables and how they affect the educational outcomes of African American males. While it is extremely important to identify contextual and structural factors related to success and failure in school, this process should be data-grounded in order to develop theoretically meaningful information about students’ experiences in schools. Here, Davis and Jordan seek to provide such grounding by using data from a large nationally representative sample of Black male 8th and 10th graders to explore key issues affecting their achievement and engagement in school.
