Self-Concept-of-Achievement Ability and Reading Proficiency of Black and White Males in an Adult Education Course

Mangieri, J. N., & Olsen, H. D. (1977). Self-Concept-of-Achievement Ability and Reading Proficiency of Black and White Males in an Adult Education Course. The Journal of Negro Education, 46(4), 456 – 461.

Black & white M adult education students (N = 188) aged 17 to 45 years were administered the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (Form B) & the Michigan State Self-Concept of Academic Ability Scale. Results show that: (1) black or white Ss reading above grade level had a more favorable self-concept than black or white Ss reading below grade level, & (2) black Ss reading above grade level had a higher self-concept than white Ss reading above grade level. 1 Table.
