The author focuses on the cultural bifurcation of W. E. B. DuBois representing the struggle for African Americans in the U.S. He notes that the historical concepts of warring ideals and twoness observed by DuBois in finding compelling evidence as contemporary phenomena. He points out that the effects of these concepts are at polarizing ends in the pursuits of his research. He reconciles these concepts in the academy which he considered complicated and dogmatic.
