One of the demographic groups in America that has seen a marked increase in suicide rates in recent years is black males, especially young black males. While there have been various arguments & theories put forth to explain this trend, theory explaining the rise in black male suicide is still underdeveloped. This analysis focuses on Stack’s (1998) thesis that increased educational attainment among blacks is not producing expected economic gains. Results suggest that when the main effects of education & poverty are controlled, lack of educational payoffs is not significantly related to increased suicide risk. Wasserman’s (1999) & Breed’s (1970) work regarding how fatalistic police contact increases black male suicide is also examined, & their work receives some support. 2 Tables, 32 References.
