Davis presents a study that seeks to better understand the relationship between student background, college-level factors, and academic performance in college by examining how these factors differentially affect African American males attending historically Black and predominantly White colleges and universities. Further, he examines in greater detail perceived social support and its contribution to college students achievement. Although some studies have suggested that perceived social support is significant predictor of outcomes for Black college student achievement, the relationship is unclear concerning differences between males and females.
