Tatum focuses on the literacy of Black males in the US. Blacks are disproportionately represented in the categories of special-needs students and low-achievers and their high school drop out rates have increased since 1990. Because of this, teachers need to create curriculum orientations and instructional practices to offer learning opportunities and encourage Black men on the importance of acquiring college degrees.
