Examines social & psychological factors contributing to the negative space in which African American males find themselves. These males have suffered disproportionately from the breakdown of the US family. African American youths have internalized negative stereotypes that they should not do well in school, & the schools themselves are no longer safe havens for academic achievement. African American males confront discrimination in legal jobs & then get attracted to dead-end or get-rich-quick schemes that require no high school or college diploma. In the absence of a supportive & nurturing family, a successful academic experience, & a good job, African American male self-esteem suffers. Suggestions to parents, educators, & social agents to reverse the sad plight of African American males are offered.
