A special issue on African American males in education. Articles discuss the impact of family functioning on the academic achievement of African American males; the underrepresentation of African American male teachers in America’s K-12 public schools; the factors that were most instrumental in influencing African American males’ decisions to pursue engineering as an academic major and career choice; the effects of attending a two-year institution on African American males’ academic and social integration in the first year of college; the perceptions of African American male junior faculty of promotion and tenure; and the hiring practices of African American males in academic leadership positions at American colleges and universities. An introduction to the special issue is also provided.
