Non-Traditional Gender Roles
One of my areas of research is men and women who enact non-traditional gender roles, primarily in work environments. What does that mean exactly? Well, these are people who in general choose to not “follow the script” society and our culture often dictates for men’s and women’s roles, decisions, and responsibilities. Examples may be roles that sex-typed in occupation (e.g., male nurses, female firefighters) or care-giving positions (e.g., stay-at-home fathers). I’m curious how and why these people enter these roles and experience the stigma that is still present in our culture. I’ve conducted several studies looking at what factors predict life and career satisfaction for these individuals. I’m also interested in how and why these roles and patterns are changing and becoming less rigid and inflexible in our culture.
